Multiple long-range missiles penetrated Israel’s layered air defenses, delivering a direct hit to a building inside the Kirya compound. The strike was part of a broader Iranian retaliation following reported Israeli operations targeting Iranian nuclear sites and high-ranking commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In total, roughly 150 ballistic missiles were launched toward Israeli territory over the course of the night.

Trump wrote that the bill is a big "WINNER." He may see it that way, but every independent assessment of the package says it will add at least $3 trillion to the long-term deficit (and potentially as much as $5 trillion). That means the bill is doing the opposite of what Trump vowed to do in March during his speech to Congress, when he promised to balance the budget.

Musk and Paul are at least living in reality. The White House, meanwhile, has resorted to trying to discredit the independent entities that have scored the bill. On Tuesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) of engaging in partisan politics by saying the BBB would add to the deficit.

OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit meant to conduct artificial intelligence research that would benefit the general public. In the company's early days, reporter Karen Hao arranged to spend time in OpenAI's offices and noticed the culture there was incredibly secretive. That secrecy raised questions for Hao that ultimately resulted in her new book, Empire of AI. The book is an intimate look at the company behind ChatGPT, but also at the industry-wide race to control AI. In today's episode, she speaks with NPR's Steve Inskeep about early disagreements between founders Sam Altman and Elon Musk, Altman's talents for fundraising and storytelling, and how the AI race is reproducing elements of colonial empire.

Russia is cut off from trade with the West as sanctions are hitting Russia's economy. Vladimir Putin's government lacks revenue from exports like oil and timber. The Russian president wants to bypass the blockade with the help of new partner countries. Russia is naturally looking elsewhere to do business. That's where a new trade route with India comes in, with both countries hoping to speed up bilateral trade. The usual trade route runs from St. Petersburg to Mumbai in India. A shipping route of about 15,000 kilometers that takes around 40 days. The container ships travel via the Suez Canal to Mumbai before reaching markets all across Asia. The New North South Route is Russia's solution to the trade blockade: via St Petersburg, Moscow, Azerbaijan and Iran to Mumbai.
